For various activities aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) through biochar application is globally recognized as a convenient method to significantly reduce the absolute amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To implement and promote this reduction method in society, the existence of a research promotion organization that integrates comprehensive knowledge from natural and social sciences has become increasingly important.
In response to this situation, last year in November of the 4th year of Reiwa, the Japan Biochar Research Center was established within Ritsumeikan University. The center will operate as an international research hub, gathering researchers in the field of biochar from both inside and outside the university, and simultaneously fostering talent in related areas.
Furthermore, to accelerate the social implementation of biochar storage both domestically and internationally, we have established the Japan Biochar Consortium, a collaboration between industry, government, academia, and the public, within the research center. This consortium will create and operate a social platform contributing to Carbon Minus (Carbon Negative) through the utilization of carbon isolation technology with biochar. By recruiting a diverse range of participants, it aims to realize a business ecosystem. Through mutual collaboration in the consortium, we also intend to discover and address social issues, contributing to regional revitalization, agricultural promotion, and various other challenges.
As part of these activities and for public awareness, outreach, and gathering of stakeholders, we will hold a kick-off symposium according to the following schedule. We sincerely invite the participation of a wide audience.
